Some of these students are selected for&nbsp;<strong>FAFSA Verification,<\/strong>&nbsp;a process that requires providing their college\u2019s financial aid office with documentation to confirm some or all the information they reported on the FAFSA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">FAFSA Verification can be scary for parents and students, but it\u2019s a standard part of the aid process. Its purpose is to catch errors, prevent ineligible students from receiving aid, and ensure that eligible students receive all the aid they qualify for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Who Gets Selected for Verification?<\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">The methods used by the federal government to determine who and what data points are selected for verification are not made public. But we do know that roughly one-third of all FAFSA submissions are selected each year. Your school may also notify you through your online account, email, or letter. But you can reduce your chances of being chosen for issues with your FAFSA by following these guidelines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\" class=\"\"><strong>Be honest.<\/strong> People who try to game the system usually get caught. Intentionally providing false or misleading information on your FAFSA is considered fraud and can result in fines up to $20,000, repayment of all aid, and up to five years in jail.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\" class=\"\"><strong>Be accurate.<\/strong> Double-check names, addresses, social security numbers, birthdates, household size, net value of assets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\" class=\"\"><strong>Consent to DDX<\/strong> to import income tax data directly into your FAFSA. Without consent your student\u2019s SAI will not be generated, and they won\u2019t be eligible for financial aid beyond federal loans.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\" class=\"\"><strong>Correct mistakes promptly.<\/strong> You can and should fix errors on your FAFSA, such as typos, misreported income, or mistakes in asset values. Corrections ensure your SAI reflects your actual financial situation on the day you filed. But you can\u2019t change your FAFSA to reflect new circumstances after filing\u2014for example, you can\u2019t lower your reported assets by spending money after the form is submitted. The FAFSA assumes your reported numbers reflect your financial position at the time of submission. This is why it\u2019s essential to do everything you can to <a href=\"https:\/\/collegeadmissionshq.org\/dont-file-the-fafsa-until-you-read-this\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">minimize your SAI<\/a> <em>before you file.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>Don\u2019t Worry!<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">If you\u2019ve reported your information honestly and accurately, a verification notice should not cause worry.
