A family\u2019s best safeguard against being pulled underwater by college costs is to fully understand how the college financial aid system works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">That understanding starts with a key number: the SAI (Student Aid Index).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is Your SAI?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">Your SAI is a number that represents the amount of money your family is expected to contribute toward college costs each year. It\u2019s calculated using the financial information you report on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), the form the federal and state governments use to determine your eligibility for need-based financial aid. Colleges use your SAI to determine your financial Need at their school using this simple equation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3854e69a18a3275e130422a1e17f2a9b\" style=\"color:#db564a;margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\"><strong>COA (Cost of Attendance) \u2013 Your SAI = Your Need<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">A college\u2019s COA is its \u201csticker price\u201d \u2013 the total cost for one academic year, including tuition and fees, housing and food, plus estimated costs for books, supplies, personal expenses, and transportation. Since each college sets its own COA, this number will vary from school to school. That\u2019s why you may have financial Need at some schools but not others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">The FAFSA-calculated SAI includes expected contributions from the student, the parent(s) (if the student is dependent), and the spouse (if the student is married) based on separate assessments of each person\u2019s income and assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0;font-size:13px\" class=\"\"><em>*Note: A small number of colleges use their own formula, called the <a href=\"https:\/\/heag.us\/understanding-institutional-methodology-im-in-financial-aid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Institutional Methodology<\/a>, to calculate a different SAI for awarding their own grants and scholarships, but they still use your FAFSA-generated SAI for federal and state aid. However, the lowest a final SAI can be is -$1,500.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li id=\"4\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">The SAI formula does not take into account a family\u2019s consumer debt, previously acquired student loan debt, state taxes, mortgage payments, medical expenses or debt, or unexpected financial setbacks.*<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\"><strong><strong><strong>4 Factors That Have the Biggest Impact on the Size of Your FAFSA-Generated SAI<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"1\" class=\"\"><strong><strong><strong>Parent Income<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong>\n<ol style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"no-markers wp-block-list\">\n<li id=\"1\" class=\"\">The SAI formula includes tax, income, and asset protection allowances, and exclusions for certain assets and untaxed income. After these allowances and exclusions, parents are expected to contribute up to 47% of what\u2019s left to the SAI. This is why parent income often has the largest impact on the SAI. But the SAI doesn\u2019t just reflect what you can pay now\u2014it also includes what you\u2019re expected to borrow and repay over time. Borrowing to cover the SAI is a major driver of high college debt. Additionally, the parent contribution to the SAI must be paid for each dependent child, no matter how many are in college at the same time, which can further increase borrowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10);margin-bottom:0\" class=\"\">Many families also don\u2019t realize that the SAI is the <em>minimum<\/em> they\u2019re expected to pay. Your Net Price each year includes your SAI plus federal loans, Work-Study awards, and the Gap (the portion of your financial Need the college doesn\u2019t cover).
